Uzbek Bride, Belarusian Groom

Just a few highlights from a post-wedding photo session in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Since the wedding day schedule was tightly packed with other activities we had to schedule our “together photo session” for another day, hitting a jackpot with a small trip to the famous Uzbek Madrasah in Tashkent.

Wedding in Uzbekistan

It all started two years ago in Miami, when we were approached by an Uzbek-born Miami-based bride who wanted us to photograph her wedding in Uzbekistan. After many months of planning and preparing, and getting Uzbek visas we flew over to Tashkent to shoot this fantastic affair.

The bride and groom started to get ready at the Radisson Blu Hotel Tashkent, the same place where the event took place. Very nice wedding venue, built to Western standards, yet brandishing some local Central Asian motifs, colors , and materials.

Did we mention before that we love long veils? Well, we do! There are so many things that one can do with it with respect to photography. We haven’t had much time shooting these so we improvised on the spot, and with the help of bridesmaid churned out these beauties. The dress and the veil were designed by Vera Wang for her 2011 bridal collection, and the shoes are by Badgley Mischka.

uzbek wedding ceremony

A few nervous moments in anticipation, just before the bride and the groom were set to enter the main balroom, they were interviewed for a local newspaper right on the staircase, and we were right there to snap a few anxious shots.

After all the guests walked in the main balroom and were placed at their seats, the traditional uzbek fanfares started up, at which point the groom made an entrance, walked over across the room to the center stage, a place where the bride and groom with their witnesses are to be seated – a lovely table set up on a podium at the head of the balroom. The fanfares subsided, the spotlight switched from the groom to the bride led in by her father, in silence, unsmiling, tense and emotional.

After a heartfelt exchange of hugs and kisses between the bride and her Uzbek family and the groom and his Belarusian family, all to the sound of cheering crowd, the newlyweds ventured into their first dance.

We saw the bride and groom practice this dance before on few occasions, and this being a very difficult wedding dance, they have done a marvelous job performing. Their dance started off the party.

At Uzbek weddings the tradition is to have performers to entertain the guests. Our couple hired a dozen of different entertainment acts: singers, dancers, musicians.. All were fantastic in their own right.

One of the performers was a famous Soviet era singer, Tashkent’s native Faruh Zakirov, a lead singer of a band Yalla, the most famous singing act to come out of Uzbekistan.

The cake was simply delicious but a few guests actually were able to taste it since the food throughout the wedding was just outstanding, cooked in the best Uzbek traditions. Following American traditions the bridal bouquet was tossed, a little far the first time, but perfectly on the second try, making an arch and landing in the midst of eager single ladies. The bouquet along with all the other flower arrangements was created by the talented designer-florist Ruben Saakyan, who is based in Tashkent but travels worldwide for all sorts of upscale floral assignments.

Russian Wedding in Denver

Another epic wedding, this time from Denver, Colorado, the home of the Broncos, Rockies, and much more.

Did we mention that we love travelling and photographing destination weddings? Well, we do! It was our very first trip to Denver and we were stunned by the sheer natural beauty of Colorado. As we were landing in DEN, Denver’s International Airport (which is an art piece by itself), we enjoyed some really terrific views: one one side of the plane beautiful snowcapped Rocky Mountains and on the other side of the plane complete gloomy desert. We could not believe our own eyes. The contrast was stunning. So much so, that when time came to shoot this wedding we made sure to keep the “contrast” theme in mind.

The getting ready was shot entirely at The Inn At Cherry Creek, a cute boutique hotel in one of Denver’s finest neighborhoods. The bride, Pavlina, who is originally from Ukraine, turned out to be lovely, inventive, and energetic with great sense of humor, and Sergei (aka Sergio), originally from Russia, who happens to be a photographer himself, was happy to oblige his fiance. And so these wonderful wedding photographs were created..

The first part of the “together” photo session was shot at Denver’s City Park, just around Duck Lake, and for the contrast we filmed the rest of the photo session downtown with the more urban brick-and-mortar look.

We absolutely love the kids in these pictures, their unique energy, almost sadness and quite possible boredom contrasting starkly with explosive behavior of the bride and groom.

The bride was a true gift to any wedding photographer, pretty, playful, full of energy and ideas, willing to go an extra mile for a great shot.

The ceremony took place at a really cute church in Aurora, however the groom brought his own pastor, a Russian Orthodox priest, who gave a very passionate, lengthy, fire-and-brimstone sermon before he performed the actual wedding ceremony. All services were conducted in Russian language, and according to rather dated Russian wedding traditions.

Back to The Inn At Cherry Creek, the party started with a bang as soon as the bride and groom made their very energetic entrance. Dances, great food, traditional Russian wedding games, and some American wedding traditions followed. One of the funny quirks of this wedding happened when the bride tossed her bridal bouquet, only she did it so hard that it flew way over the heads of the single ladies, right into the hands of one of the guys sitting by the wall, enjoying his piece of the wedding cake.

Swiss Wedding

Last summer we got hired to photograph a very unique Swiss wedding in Schaffhausen, a small adorable city up in the mountains in the north-east of Switzerland. The trip was full of adventures, and we will certainly have stories to tell for many years to come.

Schaffhausen bridal photography

The newlyweds came out of the city hall and were greeted in a hockey manner by the groom’s team. After being hit by pounds of rice the bride and groom were taken on a small voyage to the next venue in a vintage car. Ohh.. that car. What a beauty!

Despite many obstacles we had faced that day that included major equipment failure, and complete weather disaster, we are very happy with the way the photos came out. Pauline, our lovely bride who was in her last week of pregnancy turned out to be a brave little trooper and braved the elements and the grueling day schedule, and had the time and the energy to look her very best.

The Swiss Germans have this interesting wedding tradition: guests write down on a postcard some sort of a chore they would like to perform for the newlyweds, attach the postcard to a balloon and let it fly. Whoever in the area finds these postcards wherever/whenever the balloons land has an obligation to drop those postcards in the mail. Once the bride and groom receive the postcards they can call up on the guests to perform the chores they promised in the card. Kind of cute.

The venue was an old wine house (factory), with an enormous wine press in the middle of the room, built in very traditional regional style. The food was outstanding and there was a lot of it – everything was made on the spot by friends and family.

Destination Wedding Video in Thailand

Needless to say that Thailand is a beautiful place. Everyone knows that. Phuket however makes the rest of Thailand look much less impressive. Green hilled islands in the middle of the ocean with perfect weather year round make a perfect destination wedding paradise for darring couples. Phuket’s rocky peninsula, limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil bays and tropical forests make it the South Thailand’s wealthiest, busiest, most visited and most popular island. Enough said.

A breathtaking setting ensures a memorable event, and there are few places more unforgettably stunning than the island of Phuket on the Andaman Sea in the south of Thailand. Located approximately 862 kilometers south of Bangkok is Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, which is often dubbed as “the pearl of the Andaman, or the pearl of the south”. In a perfect combination of the Indian Ocean behind you and the tropical jungle rain forest on the mountains rising above you and where there are flowers are so dense their scent fills the air with the sense of exotic Southeast Asia. Phuket is a truly magical place that holds the tropical wedding & honeymoon of your dreams… We hope you choose to have a destination wedding there and take Lux with you!

Trash the Dress photo session in Punta Cana

Venue: Ocean Blue & Sand Resort www.oceanbluepuntacanaresort.com
Travel Agent: Marina Kaplan of Infinity Travel (732) 851-5150

Saving your wedding dress? Forget it! These days many brides choose to sacrifice their dresses in the name of art. The process that came to be known as “Trash the Dress” came from fashion and glamour photography, whereas beautiful people were put in unusual settings. Also known as “fearless bridal” or “rock the frock”, this style of post-wedding photography contrasts elegant clothing with an environment in which it is out of place, in our case a bride and groom swimming in the ocean off the coast of tropical island in the Caribbean.

Wedding dress on the beach

You probably remember this beautiful newlywed couple from our last month’s post about Igor and Natalia’s beach wedding in Punta Cana. Natalia Komissarova said that sitting (more like jumping, swimming, laying down) in 2010 for her post-wedding Trash the Dress photo shoot was a great idea – one of many ideas we had in mind for our post-wedding creative collaboration.

beach photo session

Being a successful NY model whose face once adorned the Times Square as part of an advertising campaign, Natalia prepared thoroughly for her beach photo shoot. She brought four different gowns, with an idea to swim in them, wear it on horseback, dirt race in a buggy wearing it, rock climb and possibly even scuba dive. As great as all those ideas were, due to a myriad of logistic snags we were only able to do one of them, which turned out to be a lot of fun and the photos speak for themselves. We were going for a very clean, Vogue look that revolves around the pure beauty of the subjects, instead of the lifestyle images that are dominant in our wedding photography work.

Engagement photo shoot

As we mentioned in the previous post about this memorable event, the Punta Cana international airport welcomes all tourists with a huge photograph stretching over the exit to the city. The photograph features our very own bride, Natalia Komissarova, photographed in a beautiful tropical setting, welcoming visitors to the Dominical Republic. You can view that and other official welcome photos on a website created by the Ministerio de Turismo de la República Dominicana – a Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic.

Natalia & Igor, a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic

Venue: Ocean Blue & Sand Resort www.oceanbluepuntacanaresort.com
Travel Agent: Marina Kaplan of Infinity Travel (732) 851-5150

One of the most exciting and wild weddings of the year, this destination wedding took us from freezing New York to the sunny and beautiful Punta Cana on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic. Eighty plus guests, mainly yuppie crowd from Brooklyn’s young and budding Russian community, including a pack of gorgeous models, Russian, Dutch, and American – friends and colleagues of the bride, all settled in Ocean Blue & Sand resort.

When it comes to decor, allure to pastel colors seem to prevail around the Caribbean hospitality community. It’s easy on the eyes and festive at the same time, and most importantly for us wedding photographers – it makes for fabulous backdrops, and gives extra character to our photographs.

This was a perfect beach wedding – white sand, great-looking couple dressed in all white, a pleasant breeze playing with white cloth that enveloped the Chuppah – all of it contrasted pleasantly with the turquoise water of the Caribbean Sea, and shone diamond-like in sparkling tropical sun.

The ceremony was a mixture of traditions, performed in English by a secular officiant, a friend of the family, while simultaneously being translated into Russian by the officiant’s assistant. Elements of Russian, Ukrainian and Jewish traditional wedding elements were used in unison, quite harmoniously despite their apparent differences.

As sun was setting over the white sanded beach, the newlyweds danced to the sounds of a local Bachata band. Music sounded passionate and tender with the swift sounds of spanish guitar set to the beats from güira and tambora.

The timing of the ceremony was spot-on perfect, culminating right at the golden hour, sun rays warmly caressing the newlyweds.

Sponsored by Ministerio de Turismo de la República Dominicana, the poster featured our very own bride, Natalia Komissarova, photographed in a beautiful tropical setting, welcoming visitors to the Dominical paradise.
